Today, my students and I focused on learning the concept of “Coming of Age.” We watched a scene from the Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom, and each student shared a time in their life when they felt that they had “come of age.”
It was an interesting experience to have students from other cultures share their stories of what it meant to grow up. One student from Turkey had a job in a jewelry shop where he learned to melt gold and form it into shapes. Another from France learned to cut hair on youtube and invited his friends over to be their personal barber.
The ability to learn a language and share personal experiences is exhilarating, and I think it is a great way for students to learn something about one another and themselves.
